What Is Crypto Escrow?

Cryptocurrency escrow is a neutral third party that holds a buyer's crypto payment until the seller delivers what was agreed. It exists because crypto has no chargebacks: once a payment confirms on the blockchain, nobody can pull it back. Escrow restores the protection that irreversibility takes away.

Start an Escrow Transaction How It Works

The problem crypto escrow solves

In a card payment, the bank stands between buyer and seller: pay for something that never arrives and you can dispute the charge. Crypto removes that middle layer. That makes it fast and borderless, and it also means the person who pays first carries all the risk. A cryptocurrency escrow service puts a neutral checkpoint back in the middle: the buyer's coins are locked with the escrow, the seller can verify they are real and reserved, and the funds only move when the deal completes.

How a crypto escrow transaction works

Both parties agree written terms inside the escrow platform. The buyer deposits the crypto to an address controlled by the escrow service and the deposit is verified on-chain. The seller then delivers the goods, domain, account or work. When the buyer confirms delivery, the escrow releases the funds to the seller. If either side disputes, a human reviews the evidence against the written terms before any money moves.

Types of crypto escrow

Custodial escrow (a company holds the funds and arbitrates), smart-contract escrow (code on a blockchain holds the funds, but a human still has to arbitrate disputes) and multisig escrow (funds locked behind multiple keys, technically strong but complex for non-technical users). Each has trade-offs; what matters most is a published dispute process, transparent fees and an operator you can actually contact.

What it costs and when to use it

Reputable crypto escrow fees run 1-5% of the deal. Ours is a flat 1%. As a rule of thumb: use escrow for any crypto deal with a stranger where losing the money would hurt. The fee is the cheapest insurance available for an irreversible payment.
